While rock music continues to fall from grace on the large scale of music popularity, there are still a few bands left who can really sell an album. Flyleaf, despite its religious undertones, is definitely one of those groups. They went platinum with their self-titled debut album and now they’re back with a second, less grungy album titled Momento Mori. There is a definite uniqueness to the Flyleaf sound, a progressive blend of rock and hard rock elements, but gone is the garage band feel that came with the earlier album. Now it’s a much more polished sound that may or may not appeal to you as a listener, depending upon your sonic preferences. Personally, I think it’s good for their careers since they can now reach a larger audience with their music, but not so good in terms of keeping things at a level that makes it easier to innovate and really bring something new to modern music.

It should be noted that despite touring with bands like Disturbed and Korn over the past few years, the Texas band definitely has stuck to its Jesus oriented lyrical content. There’s no mistaking the intention of the singer songwriter who’s been such a publicity magnet for the band. If you find heavily religious themes and lyrics to be a turn off then this is probably not the album for you, but if you’re willing to give an equal opportunity to all ideas you might a few things to enjoy on this album.
